Which Republican governor wins today’s Grand Prize for screwing up and endangering the lives of his constituents? The early leader in the clubhouse is Doug Ducey of Arizona, who apparently has decided that the extended farce over the ballots wasn’t sideshow enough. He has help, of course, from the clown college of a state legislature, which passed a state budget that included a ban on local mask mandates. On Monday, a Maricopa County judge ruled that the policy cannot go into effect until September 30 and that the Phoenix Union School District could leave its mask mandate in place.
Here comes Doug Ducey, defender of freedom, acting to save Arizonans from good health on another important front. From ABC 15:
“We encourage all Arizonans to get the vaccine — it’s safe, effective and free,” said Governor Ducey in a press release. “But getting it is a personal choice, and we will not allow discrimination based on vaccination status. Today’s order builds on our efforts to protect Arizonans from excessive mandates that hinder their freedom to choose what’s best for their health.”… Earlier this year, Ducey signed orders banning “vaccine passports” and ensuring university students would not be mandated to get a COVID-19 vaccine. Most recently, mask mandates were banned, but are being challenged by school districts and education groups.
What a guy. Local officials in Phoenix, however, remain drill thralls for the public health tyrants. From KGUN9:
City Attorney Mike Rankin released this statement to the mayor and City Council:
“My initial view is that the EO has no effect on the actions taken by the Mayor and Council on Friday. Just as the Governor lacked the authority to override the prior Pima County mask requirements by issuing an EO, he lacks the authority to preempt the actions you took on Friday,” Rankin said in the statement. “I will provide you an analysis of this EO when it is ready.” Mayor Regina Romero agrees with Rankin, and called the governor’s executive order “legally meaningless.”
Why do these people hate freedom? Why can’t they look to Texas, which knows how to handle freedom and its byproducts? From NBC News:
The mortuary trailers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be stationed in San Antonio and sent around the state at the request of local officials. Department of State Health Services spokesperson Doug Loveday said the trailers were requested Aug. 4 after officials reviewed data about increasing deaths as a third wave of the coronavirus struck the state. “We are anticipating a need within the state of Texas for these trailers as Covid cases and hospitalizations continue to increase,” Loveday said.
Nobody plans to fail. They fail to plan.
