Arizona Sports Betting Catalog: What Can You Wager On?

Bettors can choose from 57 sports and events to wager on now that Arizona sports betting is live.

The Arizona Department of Gaming released its official sports betting catalog Thursday, listing which activities users in the state can bet on going forward.

The launch of Arizona sports betting came on Sept. 9 so wagers could be placed for the start of the NFL season.

Which Sports Can Bet On in Arizona?

Users can wager using sportsbooks and sports betting apps on anything from eSports to traditional options, like baseball, basketball, football and hockey. They can also place bets on several more unique offerings, such as Australian rules football, biathlon, cornhole, cricket, darts, disc, floorball, futsal, Gaelic games, field hockey, netball and pesapallo (a bat-and-ball sport popular in Finland), among others.

The betting catalog also specifies which NCAA sports are allowed for wagering, with baseball (that includes MLB betting), basketball (that includes NBA betting and WNBA), football (that includes NFL betting), hockey (that includes NHL betting), lacrosse, soccer, softball, volleyball and beach volleyball getting the green light from the department.

Bettors can also place wagers on water polo, tennis, “summer activities,” snooker, sailing, rugby league/union, rowing, rodeo, chess, “winter athletics,” tennis, table tennis, swimming, beach and regulation soccer, sailing, the Olympics, pool, motorsports (that includes NASCAR betting), MMA (that includes UFC betting), boxing, professional lacrosse, field hockey, golf betting, cycling and badminton.

Authorized/Prohibited Wager Types

The department’s catalog also lays out which types of wagers are allowed and prohibited in the state.

Authorized events include “sports events,” which are defined as professional sports or athletic events, collegiate events, motor races, eSport events, and Olympic events.

Authorized wagers include single-game bets, teaser bets, parlays, over-under bets, moneyline bets, pools, exchange wagers, in-game wagers, in-play bets, proposition bets and straight bets.

The department’s prohibited wagers include high school sports, as well as injuries, penalties and other forms of wagering that violate state law. Additionally, the department prohibits any collegiate wagers that could result in game fixing.

“Individual actions, events, occurrences or non-occurrences to be determined during a collegiate sports event, including on the performance or nonperformance of a team or individual participant during a collegiate event,” the catalog reads. “This paragraph does not prohibit wagers on the overall outcome of a collegiate sports event or seasonal award based on a player’s cumulative overall play.”

What Sport Will Take off in Arizona?

It remains to be seen whether any surprise sports or activities will take off, wagering-wise, in Arizona.

According to the New York Times, the semiprofessional Russian Liga Pro table tennis competition has become a popular betting option in New Jersey.

In Arizona, the frequency of MMA events within the state’s borders could draw bettors to wager on bouts en masse.

Another option with strong roots in Arizona that could draw in bettors is rodeo, given the western roots that run through the Grand Canyon state.

The strong histories of Arizona and Arizona State’s baseball and softball teams could draw interest from bettors in the state as well, especially as all but ASU softball break in a new head coach in 2021.

The wild cards, like handball and professional lacrosse, could be popular options for Arizona sports bettors as well, given the rise in popularity of the latter in the state’s youth and high school levels, and the efforts of Arizona athletes, like former ASU and Cardinals QB Jake Plummer, in professional handball.

One way or another, bettors in Arizona will have plenty of options to wager on going forward, opening new opportunities for niche sports and activities around the globe.
