It’s been a year since Kyler Murray connected with DeAndre Hopkins for a Hail Mary touchdown to defeat the Buffalo Bills at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
Can you believe it?
The play, which was quickly named the “Hail Murray,” captivated the state and much of the country when it happened on Nov. 15, 2020.
It went on to win the award for best play at the ESPYs.
Here’s the video that the Cardinals tweeted out in the aftermath of the play, which gave Arizona a 32-30 win over the Bills, last season.
The moment became an iconic one for Arizona sports fans and a reminder that you can never count out a team with Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins.
Here’s how Republic Cardinals reporter Bob McManaman summed up the play in the moment:
“It wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t always pretty, but the Cardinals wound up turning it into a storybook ending when Kyler Murray wound up his right arm and fired a 43-yard pass to DeAndre Hopkins on a last-chance gasp and Hopkins came down with it for the game-winning touchdown in a 32-30 instant classic.
“Hopkins was surrounded by three Buffalo defenders in the end zone, but he leapt high into the air with two outstretched arms, got both hands on the ball, and brought it back down as his teammates swarmed him in wild jubilation.”

The Cardinals improved to 6-3 with that win over the Bills, moving into a tie for first place in the division with the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. They struggled down the stretch, however, and ended up 8-8 on the season, just missing out on their first playoff berth since 2015.
A year later, they sit at 8-2, a half-game ahead of the Rams for first place in the division, who play the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.
The Cardinals have been without Hopkins and Murray for the past two games, a win over the 49ers and a loss to the Carolina Panthers.
The Cardinals faced the Seahawks in Seattle the week after the Hail Murray. They lost that game, 28-21, the first of three straight losses that really hurt their playoff chances.
Interestingly, Arizona’s next game this season comes against the Seahawks in Seattle.
Maybe the team can help its playoff chances this time around with some more Murray magic.
