CARY, N.C. — University of Illinois LHP Cole Kirschsieper has been added to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team roster, USA Baseball announced on Thursday. The addition comes with a little under two weeks remaining on the team’s schedule.
Kirschsieper recently completed his second season with the Illini. Through two seasons, he has made 21 appearances, including six starts, and is 6-4 with a 4.30 ERA over 58.2 innings pitched.
This summer, Kirschsieper is playing in the Appalachian League for the Kingsport Axmen. He has not allowed a run over 21.0 innings pitched and opponents are hitting .104 against him.
Kirschsieper is the seventh Illini in program history to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, and first since 2014. He joins Tyler Jay (2014), Kevin O’Connor (1989), Mark Dalesandro (1989), Dave Lundstedt (1975), Randy Duarte (1975) and Doug Kleber (1974) as fellow Illini to suit up for USA Baseball.
Alongside Kirschsieper in the dugout will be head coach Dan Hartleb. Hartleb is a part of the Collegiate National Team coaching staff this summer.
The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team features 48 players in 2021. The Collegiate team has been split into two teams, the Stars and Stripes, and has been going head-to-head since July 2 in an 11-game Stars vs. Stripes series. They will also take on the Olympic team from July 18-20.
