PHOENIX (3TV/CBS5) — The busy Thanksgiving travel rush is back, and so is the traffic! On Tuesday night, drivers heading to Sky Harbor Airport to pick up friends and loved ones were greeted by bumper-to-bumper traffic just trying to get into and through the airport. Several drivers who reached out to Arizona’s Family tell us they waited almost an hour to get into both sides of the arrivals curb to pick up their passengers.
“Our passenger numbers have been steadily going up since the start of the pandemic,” Sky Harbor public information officer Greg Roybal said.
Here are some ways that may help save some time if you are planning to pick up someone from the airport during the holiday rush:
- If you’re picking up from Terminal 4, tell them to meet you on the departures deck rather than the arrivals curb. At night, there are far fewer departures than arrivals.
- Pick up your passengers at the Sky Train 44th St and Washington stop. The train station allows drivers to avoid the congested Sky Harbor Blvd and has a large area for passenger pick up and drop off. Just be aware, like curbside pickup inside the airport, drivers wait at the curb for passengers.
- Finally, use the light rail! It may be a little bit of a trek for some, but it could save you all stress and time in the long run. If you pick someone up or drop someone off, avoid the traffic by using the light rail and the accessible bridge from the light rail stop to the Sky Train.
Picking up or dropping off a passenger? We recommend using the 44th Street PHX Sky Train® Station. https://t.co/G3FMfzchVp https://t.co/7Sxz42Lrby
