This record is up from 2021′s 191 tornadoes
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has released its monthly severe weather summary for March and they say the United States has set a new record for tornadoes in March.
It’s the second consecutive year with a new record. We followed up March 2021′s 191 tornadoes with 253 this year.
You may remember one of those tornadoes. An EF-2 touched down near Gladesboro on March 23rd. It reached peak winds of 122 miles per hour and was on the ground for about two miles.
Numerous trees were snapped by the twister and it damaged two homes. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Nationally, the most violent tornado in March was an EF-4 that killed six people in Southern Iowa on March 5th.
Mississippi and Texas were two of the hardest-hit states with more than 50 tornadoes reported in each.
There had only been 64 tornadoes reported in 2022 prior to March, but it’s clear that severe weather season has arrived.
