A group of traveling amputee Veterans that have called Fond du Lac home for a week, will take the field in an exhibition softball game today(8/14/21).
The game will be played at Herr-Baker Field, on the campus of Marian University, which is also the home field of the Dock Spiders.
The group was formerly known as the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team and they have been in the Fond du Lac area hosting their Kids Camp all week. The camp is used to inspire and teach kids ages 8-12, who have been living with congenital limp loss or have suffered amputation from illness or injury, the basic fundamentals of playing ball sports.
Fond du Lac was the first Midwest city to host the camp.
The exhibition softball match will be the fourth time the Patriots have played in Wisconsin.
The day begins with a 50-mile motorcycle ride departing from Open Road Harley Davidson. Also included in the festivities today will be a team parade that will feature Kids Camp attendees, and will travel from the Radisson Hotel to Herr Baker Field.
Two games will be played today, with the first game featuring USA Patriots taking on Families of the Fallen and will include Military, Fire and Police Families. The second game will highlight Kids Camp attendees who will compete against each other to demonstrate what they have learned over the past week.
The games get underway at 1p, and and are free and open to the public.
According to Rob Vande Zande, spokesperson for USA Patriots and also part of the team, they are expecting standing-room only crowds today. Vande Zande is also joined on the team by local crowd favorites Josh Wege of Fond du Lac and Saul Bosquez of Brownsville.
