USA, Russia, Dominican Republic, Poland stay in contention for U20 podium

First stage of World Championship in Rotterdam and Kortrijk complete

USA, Russia, Dominican Republic and Poland completed the list of eight teams to continue the battles for the FIVB Volleyball U20 Women’s World Championship medals by securing the first or the second place in their pools on Sunday, as the first stage of the tournament came to a conclusion in Rotterdam and Kortrijk.

Pool A

The Netherlands and Brazil entertained the fans in Rotterdam, delivering a match full of turnarounds. The home team seized the important victory in four sets and finished on top of the pool standings, leaving Brazil in the runner-up position. In the other match of the day, Argentina recorded their first victory, outclassing Rwanda in three sets, to finish third in the pool.

Pool B

The Dominican Republic claimed the second Pool B ticket to the top eight of the tournament, leaving the other contender, Belgium, to battle on for the ninth place in the next stage of the competition. The Caribbean squad outplayed the home team in straight sets. A day earlier, Serbia snatched the top position in the pool.

Pool C

USA and Russia shut out Turkey and Thailand, respectively, to claim the top two positions in the final pool standings and progress to the top half of the tournament bracket.

Pool D

An already qualified Italy denied Belarus any attempts to join them into the top-eight stream. On the last competition day of Pool D in Kortrijk, the Italians shut out Belarus to stay unbeaten on top of the standings. In Sunday’s second match, Poland also outclassed Egypt in straight sets to claim the last remaining vacancy among the best eight teams of the tournament.
