NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion volleyball team hosts FIU for two Conference USA matches this Friday and Saturday. Friday’s match starts at 6 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start set for Saturday. Both matches will stream live on CUSA.tv.
The Monarchs return home following a two-match split at Marshall last weekend. ODU won the first match in five sets last Friday before nearly coming back from a 2-0 deficit in a 3-2 loss the next day.
Alessia Sgherza matched her own program record for single-match kills with 24 in Friday’s win. The graduate student from Massa, Italy notched a season-best attack percentage of .452 and added 13 digs for her second double-double of the year. Sgherza was one of four Monarchs with double-figure kills on Friday. Kira Smith had 13, and Hailey Duncan and Myah Conway tallied 11 as well.
Sgherza and Smith went on to post double-doubles in Saturday’s loss. Sgherza notched 18 kills and 17 digs, and Smith tallied 14 kills and 16 digs. A freshman from San Diego, Smith now has double-digit kills in each of her last five matches.
For the season, Teresa Atilano ranks fifth in C-USA with 9.46 assists per set and had back-to-back 52-assist outings against the Thundering Herd. Olivia De Jesus (1.05, seventh) and Hailey Duncan (1.04, ninth) both rank inside the top-10 in the conference in blocks per set. Additionally, Duncan ranks fifth in the league and 65th nationally in hitting percentage (.360).
The Panthers come to Norfolk following a split with Sunshine State rival Florida Atlantic. The Panthers lost 3-0 in the first match before winning by that exact margin in the second match. FIU had 15 blocks in Saturday’s win and held FAU to a .000 hitting percentage. Jade Sadeiko and Yaniris Miller-Green had six block assists apiece on Saturday.
FIU averages 2.42 blocks per set and ranks fourth in C-USA and 56th in DI in that category. Myrthe Maring is fourth in the conference with 1.21 blocks per set.
Giada Bianchi leads the Panthers with 3.51 kills per set. Camila De La Rosa averages 7.33 assists per set, and Valeria Santos is third in C-USA with 4.53 digs per set.
