Andrea Diaz of Jackson, Mississippi, knew it was going to be a momentous day. She just didn’t know how big it was going to be. After living with deafness her entire life, today was the day she would receive cochlear implants that would enable her to hear properly for the first time. As she waited nervously in the doctor’s office to receive her implants, her mom and her boyfriend, Kevin Peakman, were right there in support. Aside from the doctor’s voice, theirs would be the first words she’d hear, and her boyfriend had something special planned.
