Prescott has long been hailed as Arizona’s Christmas City, but how did this central Arizona city come to gain this moniker?
Brief History of Prescott
Founded in 1864 as the Territorial Capital of Arizona, Prescott became known as a mining town with popular guests of the Wild West such as Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp. Three of the names originally proposed were “Audubon”, “Goodwin City” and “Aztlan”, the name “Prescott” was chosen in honor of William Hickling Prescott. The Arizona Miner reported that the name “Prescott” was accepted because Prescott, author of The History of the Conquest of Mexico, was “a good citizen, a true patriot, with industry, perseverance under difficulty, amiability of character and love of country.” Throughout its history, Prescott has seen growth and decay but is now a strong powerhouse in the heart of Arizona.
Why “Arizona’s Christmas City?
In 1989, then-Gov. Rose Mofford designated Prescott as Arizona’s Christmas City because of the town’s festive lighting ceremony, which usually takes place the first Saturday in December. During the ceremony, the Christmas story as told in the Bible is read.
This year’s Courthouse Lighting and Christmas Parade was December 4th, but there is still plenty to do. Enjoy the 29th Annual Gingerbread Village, Acker Night, and lit Courthouse every night!
