Wrestling Set for Maroon and Gold Scrimmage – Sun Devil Athletics

TEMPE — Sun Devil Wrestling returns to the mat for the first time since March on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6:00 p.m. for the annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage. The Maroon and Gold intrasquad scrimmage will take place at Desert Financial Arena where admission is free and open to the public. Sun Devils Announce Full Schedule

Six Earn InterMat Preseason All-Conference Nods

 

The Sun Devils have six returning all-americans in NCAA runner-up Brandon Courtney, Michael McGee, Jacori Teemer, Anthony Valencia, Cohlton Schultz, and Kordell Norfleet. All six returners are ranked in the top-10 heading into the season according to InterMat and FloWrestling. Five of the six were Pac-12 champions last season.

 

Arizona State added a seventh All-American in Fresno State redshirt freshman transfer Kyle Parco. The Danville, California, native placed sixth at 149 lbs at the NCAA championships last season and has a preseason ranking of No. 6, according to InterMat Wrestling.

 

Top newcomers for ASU include two-time state runner up Cael Valencia who InterMat picked as the preseason Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year.

 

This season’s schedule features 11 preseason top-25 teams. Heading into this season, InterMat has the Sun Devils ranked at No. 8 (Dual Meets) and projected to finish third at the NCAA Tournament.

 

Following the Maroon and Gold scrimmage, ASU is set to compete in the Appalachian State Mountaineer Invitational on Nov. 14 in Boone, North Carolina. The Sun Devils return to DFA for the home opener against Big-12 champion Oklahoma at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 19. Be sure to secure your tickets today. 

 

Pac-12 competition gets underway with back-to-back duals on the road against Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 21 and Jan. 23. Next up is No. 24 Oregon State and No. 13 Stanford who will make a trip to DFA for a set of home matches, before the Sun Devils travel to Arkansas to take on Little Rock. The 2021-22 season wraps up with the Pac-12 Championships on March 6, which will take place in Tempe.

 

Arizona State is coming off their first top-5 finish since the 2002-03 season after they placed fourth at the NCAA tournament last year. The Sun Devils also claimed their fourth Pac-12 Championship title in five years. This season will be ASU’s last season competing at Desert Financial Arena before moving over to the new ASU Multi-Purpose Arena.
