DALLAS – Second-ranked Marshall men’s soccer redshirt junior Milo Yosef was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Yosef earns his first weekly award of the season and third of his career.
“Milo is one of those players that is unstoppable on his day,” Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. “I thought he did a tremendous job in the second half when we were down a man. When he is aggressive and penetrates like that, he’s unplayable in the college game.”
Yosef was a headache for the Charlotte defense on Saturday, constantly applying pressure and finishing the match with an assist as well as the game-winning, golden goal in extra time.
The Aachen, Germany native teamed up with senior Vinicius Fernandes for some great passing to find senior Jan-Erik Leinhos for a goal in the 25th minute. It was Yosef’s fifth assist of the season, tied for second on the team as well as a career high. The Herd led 1-0, but soon the match was tied at 1-1.
Once Marshall was a man down in the 55th minute following a red card, Yosef helped out defensively as well as continuing to push the ball downfield on the 49ers. The Herd outshot Charlotte 4-1 through the final 35 minutes of the second half despite being outnumbered on the pitch.
Yosef and his teammates did not let up in the first overtime. Charlotte was issued a red card in the 96th minute that evened the teams. The Herd took advantage and immediately pushed downfield. 30 seconds after the red card was issued the match was over off the foot of Yosef. Sophomore Gabriel Alves took a run down the far sideline and sent a pass into the box that found Yosef for the easy touch into the back of the goal.
The golden goal in the 97th minute gave Yosef his third goal of the season and 19th of his career. The redshirt junior is now tied with his former teammate Jamil Roberts for seventh all-time in career goals in team history. Yosef also has 50 career points, putting him into a tie with Ian Legget (1996-99) for ninth all-time.
Yosef has tallied at least one point in his last three matches. He scored a goal at Florida Atlantic and had the assist on the game-winner versus UAB, before putting up three points at Charlotte.
The win over the 49ers gives Marshall six-straight victories and the Herd is unbeaten in its last 12 contests as well as a guaranteed spot in the Conference USA Tournament. Marshall is also tied for the 15th-longest conference unbeaten streak (including league tournaments) in NCAA history with 17-straight.
Yosef and his teammates return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., against South Carolina at Hoops Family Field. The match will be the final home contest of the regular season and Senior Day.
